It’s this #ONEACTOFKINDNESS that keeps the #GIRLCHILD in school

Did you know that thousands of girls miss up to 50 days of school a year due to a lack of sanitary protection when it costs only R360 to keep one #girlchild in school for a year?

“At Nelson Mandela Square (NMS) we believe that this is an unjust situation and that no South African girlchild should miss a day of school because she cannot afford to buy sanitary protection,” says Nelson Mandela Square’s Centre Manager Annamarie De Carvalho,

That’s why NMS has joined forces with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and its Trek4Mandela project in its own fundraising drive to raise enough money to provide 400 schoolgirls at the Iphutheng Primary School in neighbouring Alexandra Township with sanitary protection that will assist in restoring their dignity and empower them into the future.

“We’re inviting our community to join us in #oneactofkindness aimed at preventing this situation from continuing,” says De Carvalho. “All they have to do is pledge their support by sms’ing GIRLCHILDNMS and their name to 42513. SMS’s cost R30. All proceeds go towards purchasing sanitary protection for the girls at Iphutheng Primary School. Shoppers are also welcome to drop off sanitary towels in the bin provided at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square between Thursday 28  July and Wednesday 31 August 2016.”

Richard Mabaso, Founder and CEO of the Imbumba Foundation and driving force behind Trek4Mandela, is delighted with the Nelson Mandela Square partnership. “A huge part of our campaign is about creating awareness of the enormous need that exists. Having a high profile brand such as Nelson Mandela Square as a partner goes a long way in creating that awareness and increasing our ability to make a real difference to the lives of young girls in South Africa.”

De Carvalho believes that this project highlights the many challenges all South Africans face in different ways, “I am excited to see the social change Nelson Mandela Square and Trek4Mandela can bring about by combining our energy, expertise and our passion to uplift neighbouring communities through #oneactofkindness. This is an opportunity to educate and change the lives of girls from marginalised backgrounds so let’s come together in a shared vision.”
